All domestic students taking nine (9) credit hours or more are required to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment. Students will be charged the premium on their student accounts upon registration and will be enrolled in the plan with Effective Date of 8/1. If you choose to waive and your waiver is approved, the charge will be removed from your account, and you will be removed from coverage. If the coverage is used, you will not be able to waive. A domestic student may waive out of the policy by documenting current comparable U.S. insurance coverage.
Domestic students taking between four (4) to eight (8) credit hours are eligible to enroll on a voluntary basis during the open enrollment period (prior to the waiver deadline and have their premium billed to their SMU student account.
All international students are required to maintain the Student Health Insurance Plan as a condition of enrollment. Students will be charged the premium on their student accounts upon registration and will be enrolled in the plan with Effective Date of 8/1. If you choose to wavier and your waiver is approved, the charge will be removed from your account and you will be removed from coverage. If the coverage is used, you will not be able to waive. International students must enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan unless they have an approved special waiver.
Eligible dependents of those enrolled in the plan may participate in the plan on a voluntary basis.
Graduate Student Dependent enrollment Notification: Starting with the Fall 2026 semester, a new payment option will be available to SMU graduate students who wish to enroll eligible dependents (a legal spouse and children under age 26) in the Student Health Insurance Plan.
Previously, dependent coverage premiums were required to be paid in full at the beginning of each semester. Students will now have the option to spread the cost of dependent coverage over multiple payments throughout the semester.
How the Installment Option Works
- Enroll eligible dependents online each semester.
- Make an initial payment at the time of enrollment.
- Pay the remaining balance through scheduled monthly installments.
- Payments may be made through automatic bank draft (ACH) or credit card authorization.
Fall 2026 Semester
- Initial payment due at enrollment
- Three additional monthly installment payments
Spring/Summer 2027 Semester
- Initial payment due at enrollment
- Four additional monthly installment payments
The total of all installment payments will equal the published dependent coverage premium for the applicable semester.
This new option is intended to provide students with greater flexibility in managing the cost of dependent health insurance coverage while ensuring dependents remain enrolled throughout the semester.
